The Green GOOD DESIGN Sustainability Awards aim to internationally recognize outstanding individuals, companies, organizations, governments, and institutions, along with their products, services, programs, ideas, and concepts. These awards celebrate exceptional innovation and inspire significant progress toward a healthier, more sustainable world. We are incredibly proud to receive not one, but two awards in recognition of these vibrant projects! Below we start with the descriptions for our in-progress Denver project 3900 Blake Street, and continue on with our completed Chicago Morgan Park Service Center.
3900 Blake Street, Denver’s River North Arts District (RiNo) is undergoing dramatic and rapid transition. As RiNo transforms with new zoning and development, the scale and population of the neighborhood increases. As a new physical identity emerges, there remains a familiar material continuity that echoes RiNo’s industrial precedent. The strong cultural identity of RiNo is distinguished by the interweaving of the arts and creative industry within the urban fabric. Located in a vibrant, transit-oriented redevelopment zone, 3900 Blake Street incorporates commercial, residential, and entertainment spaces, featuring 271 high-density housing units, ground level retail, parking, a landscaped roof deck and pool, in an architecturally prominent design.
Embracing biophilic design and dynamic energy efficiency and sustainability strategies, zpd+a revived an abandoned big-box retail space into a vibrant multi-use destination in Chicago’s south side Morgan Park neighborhood. The 130,000 sf Solution Center and Blue University provides over 550 new jobs to the local community, while the attached Blue Door Community Center offers public access to healthier lifestyles with wellness classes, educational seminars, and career fairs, making the Morgan Park Solution Center a beacon of light to its community. The complex program was developed around design strategies that connect nature into the office space, engaging an active office culture and creating opportunities for increased movement and interaction, leading to an enjoyable, balanced workspace that supports team rapport, encourages personal health, and increases overall
work and life satisfaction.
The reward is twice as nice when both project submissions win. We are incredibly grateful for the vision, creativity and dedication of our project teams. See you next year!
