Pho 55 Restaurant | Hospitality | Chicago, Illinois

Architecture & Interior Design by zpd+a & roomTen Design

Pho 55 was a Vietnamese restaurant in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood — steps from the University of Chicago in one of the city's most intellectually vibrant and culturally rich communities. The design brief called for an interior that could serve as a casual lunch destination and an elevated evening experience in equal measure, appealing to students, faculty, and the longtime residents who give Hyde Park its distinctive character.

The dining room is anchored by a large-scale mural inspired by an aerial photograph of Vietnamese rice paddies — a visual centerpiece that establishes cultural context for the pho-focused menu while giving the room a sense of place and artistic intention. The mural transforms what could have been a straightforward neighborhood restaurant into a destination interior, warmly received by a Hyde Park community that expects and appreciates design that goes beyond the functional.
