HeadMaze | Public Art Installation | Navy Pier, Chicago
Architecture & Construction Administration by zpd+a | Chicago, Illinois
HeadMaze is a 57-foot, four-story immersive public art installation coming to Navy Pier, Chicago in 2027. Originally conceived and built by artist Matt Schultz for Burning Man 2019, HeadMaze is now being reimagined as a permanent landmark on Chicago's lakefront — one of the largest immersive art experiences in the Midwest.
HeadMaze was conceived by multidisciplinary artist Matt Schultz. The Chicago iteration expands the original vision into a full immersive experience featuring collaborating Chicago artists, bringing local creative voices into a work of international origin.
zpd+a is the architectural partner for HeadMaze — leading the technical and regulatory transition of the structure from the Playa to the Pier.
Visitors move through a four-story monument designed as an intentional journey — combining large-scale interactive spectacle with themes of consciousness, wellness, empathy, and community engagement. The installation is designed for all ages and reflects the participatory spirit of its Burning Man origins, now rooted in Chicago's civic and arts community.
