HCSC/BCBS Regional Headquarters | Commercial | Albuquerque, New Mexico
Architecture by zpd+a in association with Dekker/Perich/Sabatini
The HCSC/BCBS Regional Headquarters in Albuquerque, New Mexico is a collaborative design by zpd+a and local firm Dekker/Perich/Sabatini, developed to fulfill the client's vision of a building that is prominent in its natural surroundings, contemporary in style, and distinctly Southwest in character. The project required a workplace environment that is healthy, energy-efficient, and filled with natural light.
The design is shaped by Albuquerque's prevailing winds and the dramatic presence of the Sandia Mountains to the east. zpd+a developed a series of seamless transitions between interior public spaces and the surrounding high desert landscape — drawing the natural environment inward through sightlines, materiality, and courtyard programming. The building's color palette complements the high desert context while creating an inviting, light-filled work environment for employees.
A freestanding, zinc-paneled single-story employee lounge anchors the scheme, facing an interior landscaped courtyard with direct views of the Sandia Mountains — a grounding counterpoint to the contemporary workplace environment and a daily connection to the New Mexico landscape.
